When we sip our morning coffee, do we ever think about its journey to our cups? The "Oceans in Our Lives" project has given me a chance to explore the fascinating history of everyday items like coffee and their oceanic voyages. Originating from Ethiopia, coffee spread globally through maritime trade. In the 17th century, Dutch traders transported coffee plants to Java, Indonesia, and then to Europe. There, coffeehouses emerged as social hubs, sparking cultural revolutions and the Age of Enlightenment. The British East India Company later exported coffee to the American colonies.
Today, coffee is a global commodity enjoyed by millions, thanks to historical trade routes. This exploration highlights how oceans connect us, serving as bridges for the exchange of goods, ideas, and cultures. By understanding the journey of coffee, we appreciate the oceans' vital role in shaping our world.
Projects like "Oceans in Our Lives" can inspire others to recognize and celebrate these connections. I’m excited to share my discoveries and hope my blog will encourage more appreciation for the oceans' significance in our daily lives.
