Have you ever thought about how the coffee in your cup or the spices in your kitchen made it to you? Through the Oceans in Our Lives project, we’re exploring the journeys of everyday items—tracing how food, fashion, and technology cross oceans to reach us. Oceans are more than vast waters; they’re the hidden highways that connect people, goods, and ideas across continents.
Each product has a story. Bananas originated in Southeast Asia but are now enjoyed worldwide, thanks to ancient and modern trade routes. Chocolate, once a luxury of Mesoamerica, spread globally as explorers and traders crossed the seas. Oceans have long been bridges between cultures, bringing flavors, ideas, and inspiration from one shore to another.
But these connections come with responsibility. Oceans face threats from climate change, pollution, and overfishing. By learning about the role oceans play in our everyday lives, we can better appreciate and protect them for the future.
Through our research and blog posts, we’re excited to share these ocean-crossing stories with you. Join us in discovering how oceans shape our world and inspire us to keep them thriving.
